FIREPLACE AND METHOD FOR THIS DL 4 U A U / U O i O
The present invention relates to a fireplace comprising a housing and a burner provided in the housing. In addition to a decorative or visual function, such a fireplace has the function of heating the room in which the fireplace is placed.
Known beards include a housing in which a burner is provided for providing flames. The burner includes an ignition to start the flames as soon as the gas supply to the fireplace has started. To reduce the amount of heat provided by the fireplace, the gas supply is often reduced. This influences the visual aspects of the flames in the fireplace related to the dimensions such as height and color of the flames. This reduces the visual aspects and decorative function of the fireplace.
The present invention has for its object to provide a fireplace with which the control of the heat production by the burner is possible without reducing the decorative function of the flames.
This object is achieved with the fireplace according to the present invention, the fireplace comprising:
- a housing;
- a burner placed in the housing for providing flames in the housing, wherein the burner comprises two or more burner segments;
- control means for controlling the burner segments.
A fireplace is often provided with at least a view or view, such as a glass front with a window to achieve the decorative function of the fireplace. In the case of a glass front, such can
BE 20xO / OJ r <8 2010/0378 front are flat, bent or have a different shape. Furthermore, the fireplace is provided with a certain width, height and depth. The fireplace is preferably provided with a gas burner that consumes gas, and more specifically often natural gas. The gas is ignited by an ignition. By providing two or more burner segments for the burner, together with control means for operating these burner segments, an independent control of the dimensions of the flames in the hearth and the amount of heat production is achieved. In case all burner segments are operated with the maximum gas supply, a maximum heat production is achieved. In case it is desired, or required, to reduce the heat production, at least one of the segments is turned off, or the gas supply in these segments is reduced. This reduces the total heat production of the fireplace. The remaining segments maintain their business at the maximum, or relatively high, gas supply. Therefore, the flames produced by these segments essentially retain their dimensions.
This means that the visual aspects and decorative function of the flames are retained independently of the reduction in heat production.
According to the invention, a burner is provided with burner segments. This minimizes costs for the fireplace and, at the same time, provides a substantially independent control of the visual aspect of the flames, such as the height of the flames, versus the heat produced by the fireplace.
In an advantageous preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the burner segments are substantially provided in their width direction of the hearth.
By providing the burner parts or burner segments in their width direction with the fireplace or with
BE aulO / OälS
2010/0378 In other words, in a side-by-side configuration, the control means controls the overall width of the flames in the fireplace. Depending on the desired heat production, the control means activate all or only some of the individual burner segments. Alternatively, or in combination therewith, the control means operate some of the segments at a different level. This makes it possible to control the heat production by the fireplace, while at the same time essentially preserving the visual aspects of the flames as a decorative function. The width of the flames can be reduced to reduce heat production, however, the visual aspect in color, height, etc. of the flames is retained.
The control means preferably control the gas supply to the individual burner segments. For efficiency reasons, a number of segments can be grouped and connected to the same gas supply. By providing more than one gas supply, preferably controlled with the control means, it is possible to control the operation of the burner segments independently of each other, or of the group of segments, to achieve the desired level of heat production while the desired visual aspects of the flames are preserved.
In a further advantageous preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the burner comprises a central burner segment and at least one burner side segment on each of the burner sides. A symmetrical flame is realized by providing a central burner segment and at least one burner side segment on each side of the burner. The central burner segment is preferably retained at the optimum combustion point where it achieves a desired visual effect as well as a decorative function with flames. The burner side segments
2010/0378 are preferably arranged and skilled to adjust the heat production.
Alternatively, the central segment is controlled and some or all of the burner side segments are operated at the optimum burning point resulting in two or more decorative hot spots within the fireplace where the optimum visual aspect of the flames is provided. Currently, control and adjustment of the side segments, while the central segment or segments are operated on the optimum and visual effect of the flames is preferred. Controlling some of the segments manipulates the width of the flames, however, the visual effect related to color and height is retained. In fact, this decouples the heat production from the decorative function. Preferably, the control means operates the burner side segments simultaneously resulting in a symmetrical visual effect of the flame.
In a further advantageous preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the ratio between the width of the central burner segments and the total width of the burner side segments is between 0.25 and 2, and preferably between 0.6 and 1.6.
In a room provided with a hearth with dimensions that matches the dimensions of the rooms, the heat production must often be reduced by 50%, i.e. the burner must be operated at 50% of the total full capacity. In known fireplaces, the visual aspect and the decorative function of the flames is reduced even further than 50% if the combustion process behaves differently at this operating point.
In a fireplace according to the present invention, the ratio is between the width of the central burner segment and the total width of the burner
2010/0378 burner side segments, i.e. the sum of width of these side segments, between 0.25 and 2. If the ratio is 0.25, the side segments have a total width of four times the width of the central segment. This is a relevant ratio for relatively large fireplaces with a relatively large width. For fireplaces with a relatively small width, comparable to a torch-like hearth, the side segments are relatively narrow. In that case the width of the central segments is twice the width of the side segments. For most fireplaces used in practice, experiments have shown that the ratio between 0.6 and 1.6 is preferred. With this ratio, the controllability of the heat production of the hearth and the width of flames produced by the burner, while maintaining the flame at the desired visual effect or level of decorative function, is optimized over essentially the entire range of operation of the burner .
In a further advantageous preferred embodiment according to the present invention, at least the gas supply to the central burner segments is adjustable in the range of 10-100%, and preferably in the range of 20-100%.
By controlling the gas supply to the central burner segments in the range of 10-100%, it is possible to further reduce the heat production by the fireplace. The current lower limit for this range, among other things, depends on the design of the burner. As one of the advantageous possibilities brought about by the hearth according to the present invention, it is possible, in a first step, to reduce the gas supply to the side segments and / or even close this gas supply. This greatly reduces heat production by the fireplace. In a second step, it is possible to further reduce heat production
2010/0378 by controlling the gas supply to the central burner segment. A 10%, usually 20%, gas supply is required to maintain a continuous (small) flame in the fireplace. In the event that the gas supply falls below 10%, often for example 20%, the gas supply must be shut off for safety reasons. The gas supply to the central burner segment is preferably continuously adjustable in the complete range. This provides for controllable heat production by the fireplace, while maintaining an optimum flame in the fireplace for as long as possible.
The present invention also relates to a method for providing a segmented flame comprising the step of providing a fireplace as described above.
Such a method provides the same effects and advantages as those described in relation to the fireplace.
Further advantages, features and details are shown on the basis of preferred embodiments thereof, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
figure 1 shows a fireplace according to the invention; and
Figure 2 shows the segmented burner with the segments according to the invention.
A room 2 (figure 1) with a ceiling 4, side wall 6 and floor 8 is provided with a fireplace 10. Fireplace 10 provides flames 12 in a housing. Flames 12 are visible through a glass front side 14 and a glass side panel 16. Fireplace 10 further comprises a rear wall 18 and side wall 20. Fireplace 12 is connected to a supply and discharge system, in the shown embodiment chimney 22 for removing combustion gases and supplying gas and primary air. In
2010/0378, the fireplace 10 is placed on a support 24.
Fireplace 10 is provided with a burner 26 (Figure 2). In the embodiment shown, burner 26 is provided with a central segment 28 with a width A, and a first side segment 30 with width B and a second side segment 32 with width C. In the embodiment shown, segments 28, 30, 32 are of fire 10 are provided with burner openings 34 which are provided in a symmetrical manner. Other configurations of burner openings 34 are also possible depending on the desired dimensions of the flames 12. Gas is supplied via gas line 36 with valve 38. Line 36 is connected to the central gas line 40. Gas line 36 supplies gas to the central segment 28. Side segment 32 is supplied with gas through gas line 42 and side segment 30 is supplied with gas through gas line 44. Both gas lines 42, 44 are controlled by valve 46. Burner 26 is provided with a control unit 48 which controls valves 38, 46 with control signals 50 , 52 respectively.
In case the heat production has to be reduced, for example in case space 2 has already reached the desired temperature, controller 48 manipulates valves 38 and 46. By manipulating valve 46 they provide segments 30 and 32 with less gas, while central segment 28 still receive the same amount of gas. Therefore, central segment 28 continues with the desired decorative flames, while the flames of the side segments 30, 32 are reduced or even sealed. This means that the visual aspect of flames 12 is preserved in the center of hearth 10, while heat production is reduced.
The present invention is by no means limited by the above described preferred embodiments thereof.
2010/0378
The rights requested are defined by the following claims within the scope of which many modifications are possible.
For example, it is possible to provide burner 26 with additional side segments 30, 32. It is also possible to provide more than one central segment 28 and / or to provide this central segment 28 somewhat out of the center of burner 26 depending on the type of fireplace. . Furthermore, it is possible to provide more than one central segment 28 distributed over the entire width of fireplace 10 in the case of a fireplace 10 with a relatively large width. This would result in various so-called hot spots with flames, even in the case of reduced heat production.
